Wednesday 18th April - leaving for London

Today we had to say goodbye to Ann. She made us feel very welcome in her home. Her cat, Utopie, was friendly.

We said goodbye to Ann at the bus stop and began another day of travel. Luckily for us this was later in the afternoon so we had time to see Ghent in the daylight.

Thank you Ann for your wonderful hospitality, feeding us, and for driving us around, even if driving on the wrong side of the road was making me nervous and confused. We are so grateful and hope we can repay the favour someday.

We visited Saint Bravo's cathedral, which was beautiful. There was so much detail in this church too. A few of the chapels and items were being restored, but a treat was listening to a harp player in one of the chapels. You can see his head in the corner of this photo :). I do have video but can't post it.

Along the walking tour, we deviated to find a street well known for graffiti art. There were some amazing pieces. Unfortunately some of the art work had been tagged over and ruined.

I found the Smurfs' house! They are Belgian don't you know?!

This was the tourist information centre with Neptune at the top. It us to be the old fish market.

The castle was pretty cool! Justin really like the armoury and weapons display. I'll put a few photos here for the boys.

This was a executioner's sword, hence no tip.

This one has a small gun near the handle - look hard.

The view from the top.

The guillotine :)

There was a whole room showing different forms of torture. Be thankful you weren't naughty back then, some were just horrific.

The outside latrine

We did some general sight seeing, tried to find somewhere to buy a stamp and bought some 'noses' and orangettes on the recommendation from Ann. Noses are purple cone or nose shaped candy that are runny on the inside and hard on the outside, basically just made of sugar. In summer you can have other colours and flavors too.

The last thing of the day to do was to sit down and enjoy a beer in a gorgeous little pub next to 'The Meat Market', which is now a place to buy tasty foods. I am enjoying a Kriek beer here - cheery flavoured.

Bring on London.
